Who Is Six-Armed White Mahakala?
White Mahakala — Shad-bhuja Sita Mahakala in Sanskrit — is among the most revered Dharmapalas in Vajrayana Buddhism. An enlightened emanation of Avalokiteshvara, he channels wrathful compassion to eliminate obstacles, protect practitioners, and magnetize prosperity. His white form is uniquely associated with wealth, purification, and swiftly removing hindrances on the spiritual path.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
Three fierce, wide eyes blaze with omniscient awareness, seeing through all illusion and deception. His six arms wield sacred implements — including a curved knife (kartrika), skull cup (kapala), and trident — each severing a specific form of spiritual obstacle. Standing in alidha — the warrior's dynamic stride — atop prostrate figures, his posture radiates unstoppable protective force and absolute mastery over negativity.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
White Mahakala's six arms represent mastery over the six paramitas — perfections of generosity, ethics, patience, effort, meditation, and wisdom. The flaming aureole burns away ignorance. Turquoise inlays invoke sky-like wisdom; red coral channels vital protective energy. Together, they make this an unparalleled talisman of spiritual and material guardianship.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Mahakala Tantra declares: "Where Mahakala dwells, obstacles dissolve and abundance flows." His wrathful appearance is pure compassion in disguise — fierce only toward the forces of harm.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Shri Mahakala Hum Hum Phat Svaha”
Meaning: "Om, glorious Mahakala, destroy (obstacles), destroy, cut through, Svaha (so be it)."
