Why This Statue?
This Sakyamuni Buddha achieves something rare — pure, unadorned golden magnificence. Standing nearly 13 inches tall and gilded entirely in 24K gold, the statue lets the craftsmanship speak without distraction. The hand-painted face is exceptional: precisely arched blue brows, a delicate third-eye spiral, elongated eyes of calm authority, and finely painted lips that carry a barely perceptible, knowing serenity. The robes are covered in hand-carved scrollwork that catches light and shadow with extraordinary depth. The lotus throne's carved petal tiers and beaded border add elegant architectural weight. For collectors who prize pure artistry over ornamentation, this statue is definitive.
Who Is Sakyamuni Buddha?
Sakyamuni, (Tibetan: Shakya Thubpa)— means "Sage of the Shakya Clan." He is the historical Siddhartha Gautama: born a prince, he renounced worldly life, attained complete enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, and spent decades teaching the path beyond suffering to all beings. Revered as the foundational Buddha of this era, Sakyamuni is the root teacher across every Buddhist tradition worldwide.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The painted eyes — elongated, lined in blue, and serenely downcast — radiate the settled, unmoving awareness of one who has seen through all phenomena. The right hand descends to earth in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture of enlightenment's unbreakable witness. The left hand rests in Dhyana Mudra, cradling an alms bowl in quiet, open receptivity. He sits in full lotus (padmasana) upon an ornately carved lotus throne, every scroll of his robe whispering of renunciation transformed into golden completeness.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The unbroken 24K gold finish is itself the teaching — the deathless, luminous nature of mind, beneath every thought and emotion, already perfect. The earth-touching hand is the moment awakening became permanent, witnessed and verified by the earth itself. The alms bowl represents the ego dissolved into open, humble service. The dark ushnisha curls crown an awareness that has outgrown every limitation. Together, this statue is a complete teaching: seek within, find gold.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Buddha taught: "Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṃ, kusalassa upasampadā, sacittapariyodapanaṃ" — "Cease all evil, cultivate all good, purify the mind." This golden statue gives those three instructions a permanent, luminous home. The Newar master artisans of Patan, Nepal — custodians of a living 1,500-year tradition — enshrine that teaching into every 24K gold lost wax casting.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Muni Muni Mahamuni Shakyamuniye Svaha”
Meaning: "Om, Sage, Sage, Great Sage, Sage Of The Shakyas — So Be It!"
Chanting this mantra before the statue purifies karmic obscurations, cultivates clarity and inner peace, and draws the direct, living blessings of the Awakened One into your meditation practice and sacred space.
