Why This Statue?
This Vajradhara is unlike anything in conventional sacred art collections. What immediately arrests the eye is the striking deep blue body — acrylic hand-painted with exceptional precision — set against richly 24K gold-plated robes, crown, and ornaments. Hand-carved turquoise and red coral gemstones jewel the lotus throne and crown, creating a bold, jewel-toned contrast of extraordinary visual depth. Cast using the ancient lost wax method, every detail from the scrollwork throne to the delicate crown finial is executed with master-level craftsmanship.
Who Is Vajradhara?
Vajradhara, (Tibetan: Dorje Chang), "the Holder of the Thunderbolt" — is the primordial Buddha of the Kagyu and Gelug schools of Tibetan Buddhism, considered the ultimate source of all tantric teachings. He represents the dharmakāya — the body of ultimate truth — beyond form, beyond time, and beyond all conceptual elaboration. When Shakyamuni Buddha transmitted the highest tantric teachings, he is said to have manifested as Vajradhara to do so.
Key Features: Posture, Eyes, and Hands
Vajradhara sits in padmasana — the immovable full lotus posture — embodying absolute, unshakeable enlightenment. His acrylic hand-painted eyes are half-closed in deep meditative absorption, gazing inward toward the nature of mind itself. His arms are crossed at the heart in vajrahumkāra mudrā — the thunderbolt gesture — his right hand holding the vajra and his left the ghanta bell. This iconic crossed-arm gesture powerfully symbolises the inseparable union of wisdom and compassion, the very heart of Vajrayana realisation.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Vajradhara's deep blue form represents the boundless, unobstructed expanse of dharmadhātu — the ultimate nature of reality. Blue, in Vajrayana iconography, is the colour of the Akshobhya Buddha family, signifying mirror-like wisdom that reflects all phenomena without distortion or attachment. His jewelled crown and gold-plated robes reflect his sovereignty as the primordial source of all Buddhist tantra, beyond any historical or temporal limitation.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Hevajra Tantra proclaims: "Vajradhara, the primordial one, resides in the hearts of all beings as the ground of pure awareness." The Guhyasamāja Tantra declares him the supreme embodiment of all Buddhas across all three times — the indestructible ground from which every tantric path ultimately springs and to which every path ultimately returns.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Vajradhara Hum”
"Salutations to the primordial holder of the vajra — may the indestructible wisdom of the ultimate nature of mind be fully realised within me."
