Who is Tsongkhapa?
Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), known in Tibetan as "Lobsang Drakpa," was a renowned philosopher and founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. His revolutionary teachings emphasized rigorous study, ethical discipline, and the integration of wisdom and compassion, profoundly influencing Tibetan Buddhist practice.
Iconographic Details and Posture
The central Tsongkhapa figure sits in lotus posture, embodying meditative stability. His distinctive yellow pointed hat symbolizes the Gelug tradition. Both hands perform the dharmachakra mudra at his heart, representing the turning of the dharma wheel. The delicately painted eyes convey compassionate wisdom, while lotus stems rising beside him support the sword of wisdom and scripture. Flanking their beloved master are his two principal disciples: Gyaltsab Je (to his right) and Khedrup Je (to his left), both depicted in identical meditative postures with hands in teaching mudras. Representing the unbroken lineage of teachings.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
This trinity represents the guru-disciple relationship's sacredness and the continuity of Buddhist wisdom across generations. The set embodies the three jewels: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, reminding practitioners of refuge and spiritual community.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The presence of wisdom texts and symbolic implements reflects the Buddhist principle of "prajna" (transcendent wisdom) united with "upaya" (skillful means), demonstrating that enlightenment requires both intellectual understanding and compassionate action.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Ah Guru Vajradhara Sumati Kirti Siddhi Hum”
This mantra invokes Tsongkhapa's enlightened qualities, requesting blessings for wisdom, virtue, and accomplishment on the path to enlightenment.
