Why This Statue?

This Manjushri stops every eye the moment it enters a room. Fully gilded in 24K gold and standing over 13 inches tall, the raised flaming sword alone makes this statue unlike any other in sacred Buddhist art. The jeweled crown set with turquoise and coral inlays, the finely painted face, elaborate beaded necklaces, and ornately carved lotus throne with scroll armrests all demonstrate exceptional Newar craftsmanship. Dynamic, luminous, and spiritually charged, this piece is as visually dramatic as it is devotionally powerful. For wisdom-seekers and serious collectors, it is unrivaled.

Who Is Manjushri?

Manjushri, (Tibetan: Jampelyang) — means "Gentle Splendor" or "Sweet Glory." Known in Sanskrit as Mañjuśrī, he is the Bodhisattva of transcendent wisdom and knowledge, the supreme embodiment of prajña — the penetrating insight that directly perceives the nature of reality. Revered across Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions, Manjushri is the patron deity of scholars, students, and all who seek liberation through wisdom.

Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture

The finely painted eyes carry serene, razor-sharp discernment — calm yet luminously awake. The right hand raises the flaming sword (khaḍga) overhead, poised to sever the root of ignorance in a single stroke. The left hand rests gracefully at the heart, holding the stem of a lotus upon which rests the Prajnaparamita scripture — wisdom both held and lived. He sits in full lotus (padmasana) upon an ornate double lotus throne with scroll armrests, embodying the stable, fearless seat of perfect understanding.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

The flaming sword is Manjushri's defining symbol — it does not destroy life, it destroys ignorance, the ultimate root of all suffering. The Prajnaparamita text at his heart declares that wisdom is not merely intellectual but direct, experiential, and liberating. The lotus throne affirms that perfect knowledge arises from purity of mind. Turquoise inlays represent mental clarity; coral channels vital energy that fuels the pursuit of understanding. Together, this statue declares: wisdom is the sharpest, most compassionate force in existence.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The Prajnaparamita Sutra proclaims: "Iha Śāriputra, rūpaṃ śūnyatā, śūnyataiva rūpam" — "Form is emptiness; emptiness is form." Manjushri is the living embodiment of this realization. The Newar master artisans of Patan, Nepal — custodians of a living 1,500-year tradition — encode that liberating insight into every stage of the 24K gold lost wax (cire perdue) casting.

Sacred Mantra

“Om Ah Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhih”

Meaning: "Om, The Essence Of Wisdom's Five Syllables, Dhih."

"Dhih" is the seed syllable of Manjushri's wisdom mind itself. Chanting this mantra before the statue sharpens intelligence, removes mental obscurations, enhances memory and learning, and opens the practitioner directly to Manjushri's limitless, illuminating wisdom blessings.
