Why This Statue?
This Manjushri statue commands immediate attention. The warm saffron-toned body glows against richly gilded robes, while turquoise and coral inlays punctuate the crown, jewelry, and lotus throne with vibrant color contrast. The silver-finished flaming sword rises dramatically overhead, making this piece visually unlike any standard gilded figure. At 40 cm tall and nearly 6 kg, it carries substantial presence. The hand-painted acrylic detailing on the robes and lotus base achieves a depth and warmth that pure gilding alone cannot produce — a hallmark of Patan's finest atelier work.
Who Is Manjushri?
Manjushri, (Tibetan: Jampelyang), is the Bodhisattva of Wisdom — the embodiment of prajna, the sword-like insight that cuts through ignorance to reveal ultimate reality. Revered across Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions, he is the patron deity of scholars, students, and all who seek clarity of mind and liberation through understanding.
Iconographic Features
Manjushri sits in padmasana, radiating dynamic energy despite his meditative seat. His right hand raises the khadga — the flaming sword of wisdom — poised to sever the root of delusion. His left hand holds a lotus stem supporting the Prajnaparamita sutra, the scripture of perfected wisdom. The eyes carry a focused, slightly intense gaze — wisdom alert and penetrating. An ornate five-jewel crown, large turquoise ear ornaments, and cascading jewelry mark his princely sambhogakaya form.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The flaming sword does not destroy — it liberates. It cuts the three poisons of ignorance, attachment, and aversion that bind sentient beings to suffering. The Prajnaparamita text resting in his left hand signifies that wisdom must be studied, internalized, and ultimately embodied. Together, sword and scripture declare: insight without knowledge is blind; knowledge without insight is inert.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
Prajñā pāramitā — "The perfection of wisdom." The Prajnaparamita Sutra declares: "Form is emptiness; emptiness is form." Manjushri personifies the direct realization of sunyata — the empty, interdependent nature of all phenomena — which the Vajrayana regards as the foundation of all authentic practice.
Sacred Mantra
“Om A Ra Pa Ca Na Dhih”
"Om — the seed syllables of Manjushri's wisdom body, speech, and mind — Dhih."
Dhih is Manjushri's seed syllable, representing the spark of awakened intelligence. Recitation sharpens the mind, enhances memory, and opens the practitioner to the blessings of boundless wisdom.
