Why This Statue?

This Yamantaka is a rare and breathtaking altar piece. The acrylic hand-painted composition blazes with a dramatic palette — deep midnight-blue body, vivid orange and gold flames forming a towering aureole, a black buffalo mount, and the blue consort — all set against gold-plated ornamental details and a richly multicoloured lotus base. Every element, from the multi-armed form to the trampled figure beneath, is rendered with exceptional sculptural drama and precision. Cast using the ancient lost wax method at 33 cm and 5.54 kg, this is a powerfully substantial and visually unforgettable sacred piece.

Who Is Yamantaka?

Yamantaka — "the Destroyer of Death" — is one of the most powerful wrathful deities in Vajrayana Buddhism, specifically within the Gelug school. He is the wrathful manifestation of Manjushri — the Bodhisattva of wisdom — who assumed this terrifying buffalo-headed form to defeat Yama, the god of death, and liberate beings from the cycle of mortality and rebirth. He embodies the ultimate victory of enlightened wisdom over death, fear, and all that perpetuates suffering.

Key Features: Posture, Eyes, and Hands

Yamantaka stands in āliḍha — the dynamic striding posture of a warrior — mounted upon a black buffalo, trampling figures representing the conquered forces of death and delusion beneath his feet. His acrylic hand-painted eyes are wide, blazing, and terrifyingly direct — the gaze of wisdom so fierce that no illusion, no fear, and no attachment can survive its encounter. His multiple arms radiate outward in every direction, each holding a sacred implement of enlightened activity — including a skull cup, a chopper, a lasso, and ritual weapons — representing the comprehensive dismantling of all forces that perpetuate death and ignorance. His blue consort (Vajravetali) embraces him, representing the inseparable union of wisdom and method at the heart of the Yamantaka practice.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

Yamantaka's buffalo head directly mirrors the head of Yama — death itself — symbolising the radical Vajrayana teaching that death is conquered not by avoiding it but by becoming its very master. His towering halo of flames represents the fire of prajñā that burns away every obscuration preventing liberation. The trampled figures beneath his feet represent the five poisons — ignorance, desire, aversion, pride, and jealousy — destroyed completely by the power of his wrathful, compassionate wisdom. His midnight-blue body reflects the infinite, boundless expanse of the dharmadhātu — the ultimate nature of reality beyond birth and death.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The Yamantaka Tantra proclaims: "He who realises the nature of mind has conquered death — for where there is no self, there is nothing that can die." The great Gelug master Je Tsongkhapa regarded Yamantaka practice as the swiftest path to complete enlightenment within a single lifetime, requiring only unwavering devotion, pure motivation, and fearless engagement with the ultimate nature of existence.

Sacred Mantra

“Om Yamantaka Hum Phat”

"Salutations to the Destroyer of Death — may all fear of death and impermanence be completely dissolved, and may the deathless nature of the awakened mind be fully realised within all beings."
