Why This Statue?
At nearly 51 cm tall and 9.5 kg, this Maitreya commands a room. The 24K fire gilding radiates a living warmth that cold-gilded pieces simply cannot replicate. Lapis lazuli beads ring the ornate prabhavali halo, coral and turquoise punctuate the crown and jewelry, and the robe borders carry finely painted geometric detailing in red and blue. Rising from a generous double-lotus throne, flanked by a Dharma wheel and vase-topped lotus stems, this is a complete iconographic composition of exceptional refinement.
Who Is Maitreya Buddha?
Maitreya is the Buddha of the Future — the awakened being presently residing in Tushita heaven, awaiting his descent to guide humanity when the Dharma of Shakyamuni has faded. Revered across all Buddhist traditions, he embodies boundless loving-kindness (maitri) and the living promise that awakening remains available to all.
Iconographic Features
Maitreya sits in the rare dharmachakra mudra — both hands raised at the heart, fingers turned inward in the gesture of teaching the Wheel of Dharma. This posture signals his identity as a future teacher, perpetually mid-teaching. The eyes are serene yet subtly forward-facing, as if gazing toward a future he already inhabits. A five-jewel crown marks his bodhisattva royalty; the small stupa resting within his crown is his most distinctive iconographic marker.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The Dharma wheel flanking Maitreya on his lotus stems represents the continuous turning of the Buddha's teaching across time. His dharmachakra mudra affirms that wisdom is not withheld — it is always being offered. The lotus throne signals purity arising from the world's conditions, untouched by them.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
Maitri — loving-kindness — is the first of the four Brahmaviharas, the divine abodes of the awakened mind. The Maitreya-vyakarana records Shakyamuni's own prophecy: Maitreya will appear when human lifespan reaches eighty thousand years, and all beings will hear the Dharma directly.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Maitreya Maha Maitreya Svaha”
Recitation of this mantra cultivates loving-kindness, plants seeds for connection with Maitreya's future dispensation, and opens the heart to the unconditional compassion that defines the coming Buddha's very essence.
