Why This Statue?
Few statues command attention like this one. Its towering throne backrest — alive with filigree scrollwork, dharma wheels, and mythical creatures — frames Maitreya in majestic splendor. The 24K gold gilding glows with warmth, while turquoise and coral inlays punctuate the crown and jewelry with sacred color. This is a statement piece of devoted iconographic complexity and breathtaking Nepalese artisanship.
Who Is Maitreya Buddha?
Maitreya, known in Tibetan as Jampa — "Loving One" — is the future Buddha, currently residing in Tushita Heaven, awaiting the right moment to descend and teach humanity. Revered across all Buddhist traditions, he embodies boundless loving-kindness and the collective hope for a coming golden age of dharma.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
His hand-painted eyes are open and forward-gazing — alert, warm, and full of anticipatory compassion for all future beings. Both hands are raised in Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture of turning the Wheel of Dharma, holding stems of lotus flowers. Uniquely, he sits in Bhadrasana — legs pendant, feet resting on a lotus base — symbolizing his readiness to descend to earth and teach.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Maitreya's forward-facing posture and pendant legs signal active engagement with the world rather than withdrawal. The celestial canopy represents divine protection. The dharma wheel flanking his throne symbolizes the continuous turning of sacred teachings. His jeweled crown reflects his bodhisattva status — fully enlightened yet remaining for all beings.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Maitreyavyākaraṇa declares: "Maitreya, the compassionate one, will arise when humanity is ready." His Sanskrit name derives from Maitrī — "loving-kindness" — the boundless wish for all beings to know happiness, forming the very foundation of his enlightened mission across all ages.
Sacred Mantra
“Om maitri mahamaitri maitriye soha”
"Om, loving-kindness, great loving-kindness, to Maitreya, svaha." Chanting this mantra cultivates boundless loving-kindness, opens the heart to universal compassion, and aligns the practitioner with the joyful energy of the coming Buddha.
