Who Is Green Tara?
Green Tara — Shyama Tara in Sanskrit — is the most beloved and widely worshipped of the twenty-one Taras. The swift mother of liberation, she is the Bodhisattva of active compassion — never merely observing suffering but leaping forward instantly, with the urgency of a mother reaching for her child, to liberate every being from fear, obstacle, and sorrow.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
Green Tara's bright, forward-gazing eyes shimmer with alert, watchful compassion — seeing all suffering simultaneously and responding without hesitation. Her right hand extends in varada mudra — the open gesture of supreme generosity and wish-fulfillment. Her left hand, raised at her chest, holds the stem of a blue utpala lotus, fingers elegantly forming a gesture of refuge and reassurance. Seated in lalitasana — her right leg gracefully extended and ready to step forward — upon a broad, ornate lotus throne, her entire posture radiates readiness: compassion eternally on the verge of action.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Green Tara's golden form in this statue radiates solar compassion — active, warming, life-sustaining. The turquoise inlays invoke the sky-like openness of her awareness; red coral channels the vital energy of her swift, life-protecting action; lapis evokes the depth of her wisdom. The open lotus beside her symbolizes purity and the perpetual blossoming of liberation available to all who seek her grace without delay.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Praises to the Twenty-One Taras declares: "Homage to you, swift one, whose eyes flash like lightning — born from the lotus face of the Lord of the Three Worlds." Green Tara's swiftness is her supreme gift — in the time between one breath and the next, she is already present, already acting, already liberating.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha”
Meaning: "Om — Tare (liberating from samsara), Tuttare (liberating from fears and obstacles), Ture (granting all wishes and swift liberation), Svaha (so be it, may all blessings be established)."
