Why This Statue?

This Mitrugpa statue is genuinely rare in both subject and finish. The acrylic hand-painted stone-grey body — cool, matte, and quietly monumental — gives the statue the visual character of ancient carved rock, evoking the feeling of a sacred relic recovered from a Himalayan monastery. Subtle acrylic-painted facial details, including the warm lips and deep blue uṣṇīṣa, provide delicate contrast against the stone-coloured form. Cast using the ancient lost wax method, every detail of the robe carvings and lotus throne is rendered with precision. At 20.5 cm and just over 1 kg, it is perfectly proportioned for personal shrines and intimate altar spaces.

Who Is Mitrugpa?

Mitrugpa, (Sanskrit: Akṣobhya), meaning "the Immovable One" — is the Buddha of the eastern direction and one of the five Dhyāni Buddhas of Vajrayana Buddhism. He embodies the transformation of aggression and hatred into mirror-like wisdom — the clear, undistorted awareness that reflects all phenomena without reaction or rejection. Revered especially in Vajrayana traditions for his powerful purification of negative karma, he is invoked to dissolve obstacles arising from broken vows and harmful actions.

Key Features: Posture, Eyes, and Hands

Mitrugpa sits in padmasana— the immovable full lotus posture — his stone-painted form projecting the quality of absolute, unshakeable stillness. His acrylic hand-painted eyes are half-lowered in deep meditative absorption, carrying the quality of mirror-like wisdom — perfectly clear, perfectly undisturbed, perfectly present. His right hand reaches forward in bhūmisparśa mudrā — the earth-touching gesture — mirroring the moment he made his great vow of immovability before all the Buddhas, calling the earth to witness his unbreakable commitment. His left rests in his lap cradling a vajra — the thunderbolt of indestructible awakened mind — representing his mastery over the eastern Buddha family of purified aggression.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

Mitrugpa's stone-grey form evokes the element of earth — solid, immovable, and capable of bearing the weight of all things without complaint or collapse. His mirror-like wisdom reflects the teaching that the most destructive energy — hatred and aggression — when fully seen and not acted upon, transforms naturally into the clearest, most undistorted awareness of all. His lotus throne, carved with characteristic Newar precision, represents the transcendence of saṃsāra through the power of an unbreakable vow maintained across countless lifetimes.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The Akṣobhya Tathāgata Sūtra records his great vow: "May I never feel anger or malice toward any being — and if I break this vow, may I not attain perfect Buddhahood." This vow, maintained flawlessly across countless lifetimes, is the very foundation of his Buddhahood and the source of his immeasurable purification power for all beings.

Sacred Mantra

“Om Akshobhya Hum”

"Salutations to the Immovable One — may the mirror-like wisdom that perceives all phenomena with perfect clarity and equanimity be fully awakened within all beings without exception."
