Who Is Dzambhala?
Dzambhala is the Vajrayana Buddhist deity of wealth, generosity, and material liberation. An emanation of Avalokiteshvara's compassion, he does not merely grant riches; he dissolves the spiritual poverty that breeds suffering, channeling abundance toward dharmic living and the benefit of all beings.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
Dzambhala's wide, fierce eyes — vividly painted in blue and white — blaze with penetrating awareness, cutting through the illusions of scarcity. His left hand grips the jewel-spewing mongoose (nehulay), endlessly releasing treasures. His right hand clutches the wish-fulfilling jewel. Seated in rajalilasana — the posture of royal ease — his magnificently rotund, golden form radiates the supreme contentment of one who has conquered all want.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The mongoose overflows with jewels, symbolizing the inexhaustible generosity of enlightened wealth. The ruby inlays evoke vital life-force energy, while emeralds reflect growth and renewal. The lotus throne grounds divine abundance in the purity of shunyata — emptiness from which all prosperity flows freely.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Bodhicaryavatara teaches: "All the suffering in the world arises from seeking happiness for oneself." Dzambhala redirects wealth toward dana — selfless giving — transforming prosperity into a vehicle for liberation.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Dzambhala Dzalendraye Svaha”
Meaning: "Om, I invoke Dzambhala, the lord of wealth, Svaha (so be it)."
