Who Is Simhanada Manjushri?
Simhanada Manjushri, meaning "Lion-Roar Manjushri" — is a powerful and rare form of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of transcendent wisdom. In this form, he rides a lion — symbolizing the fearless, thunderous proclamation of prajna (wisdom) that dissolves ignorance as a lion's roar silences all other sounds across the forest.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
The hand-painted blue eyes radiate calm, penetrating intelligence — the unwavering gaze of wisdom that sees the true nature of all phenomena. His upper right hand brandishes the Prajnaparamita sword of wisdom, poised to sever the root of ignorance, while a second hand holds a sacred text, and others display vitarka mudra — the teaching gesture. Seated cross-legged in sovereign composure atop his roaring lion, he embodies wisdom in its most active, fearless, proclamatory form.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The lion mount represents the simhanada — the lion's roar of dharma — the declaration of ultimate truth that reverberates across all realms, awakening beings from the slumber of ignorance. The filigree aureole radiating behind him is the luminous field of prajna itself, the all-illuminating light of wisdom that leaves no shadow of confusion anywhere it reaches.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Mañjuśrīnāmasamgīti proclaims: "Manjushri is the wisdom-mind of all buddhas condensed into one form." His sword does not cut flesh — it severs avidya (ignorance) at its very root, the fundamental misperception of self that drives all suffering across countless lifetimes and realms.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Ah Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhih”
"Om" opens universal awareness; "Ah Ra Pa Tsa Na" are the five wisdom syllables purifying the five afflictions into five wisdoms; "Dhih" is his heart seed syllable — igniting discriminating intelligence, memory, eloquence, and the direct realization of emptiness within the practitioner's mind.
