Why This Statue?
Few sacred objects command attention like this oxidized copper Sakyamuni Buddha. Standing nearly 20 inches tall and weighing over 25 lbs, it is a substantial, presence-filling centerpiece — not a decorative trinket. The oxidized finish develops a warm antique golden-brown tone that deepens over time. Every robe fold and ornamental border was carved by hand, ensuring no two pieces are identical. For collectors seeking authentic Himalayan sacred art, this statue is unmatched.
Who Is Sakyamuni Buddha?
Sakyamuni, (Tibetan: Shakya Thubpa), means "Sage of the Shakya Clan." He is the historical Siddhartha Gautama: the prince who renounced royalty, attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, and taught humanity the path beyond suffering. Revered across all Buddhist traditions, Sakyamuni is the founding Awakened One of this age.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The half-closed eyes reflect Dhyana — meditative absorption — turned inward toward boundless awareness. The right hand touches the earth in Bhumisparsha Mudra, calling it to witness his enlightenment. The left hand cradles an alms bowl in Dhyana Mudra, symbolizing compassion and renunciation. He sits in full lotus (padmasana) upon a hand-carved lotus throne, representing purity rising above attachment. The ornate robe borders, ushnisha (crown protrusion), and elongated earlobes are hallmarks of the classical Newar tradition.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Every detail carries profound meaning. The lotus throne embodies spiritual purity. The earth-touching hand affirms unshakeable awakening. The alms bowl symbolizes humility over ego. Oxidized copper — sacred in Himalayan tradition — channels grounding earth energy. Together these elements make this a living symbol of the Buddhist path: renunciation, perseverance, and liberation.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Buddha taught: "Ātmadīpo bhava" — "Be a light unto yourself." This statue anchors that teaching in form. The Newar artisans of Patan, Nepal — heirs to a 1,500-year lineage — preserve that spirit through the lost wax method, capturing sacred proportion in every cast.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Muni Muni Mahamuni Shakyamuniye Svaha”
"Om, Sage, Sage, Great Sage, Sage Of The Shakyas — So Be It!"
Chanting this mantra before the statue purifies karmic obstacles, sharpens the mind, and invites the blessings of the Awakened One into your space and practice.
