Why This Statue?
This Standing Tara is simply unlike any other. Nearly 20 inches tall and framed within a magnificent flame-shaped prabhavali (aureole) studded with turquoise and red coral inlays, she commands reverence the moment she enters a room. The luminous gold-painted face and acrylic detailing contrast dramatically against the deep oxidized copper body and halo, creating a visual depth that is breathtaking. The tiered lion-footed pedestal adds further architectural grandeur. Every element — from the scrolling halo carvings to the jeweled waistband — was crafted entirely by hand using the ancient lost wax method. This is wearable devotion cast in copper.
Who Is Standing Tara?
Standing Tara, (Tibetan: Dölma Shugpa), represents Tara in her most active, responsive form. Known in Sanskrit as Shyama Tara or simply Tara, she is the female Bodhisattva of swift compassion and liberation. While seated Tara embodies meditation, Standing Tara has already risen — she moves toward suffering beings without hesitation, embodying immediate, unconditional rescue.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The gold-painted face and wide, open eyes radiate warmth, alertness, and fearless compassion — fully present, fully engaged. The right hand extends downward in Varada Mudra, the boon-granting gesture of boundless giving. The left hand holds a half-open lotus (utpala), symbolizing unfolding liberation. She stands tall and poised on a lotus pedestal, weight subtly shifted — caught mid-stride toward those who call her name. The flame aureole behind her pulses with protective, enlightened energy.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The prabhavali flame represents the burning away of ignorance and fear. Turquoise inlays invoke healing and clarity; red coral channels life force and vitality. The open lotus in her hand symbolizes liberation always within reach. The lion-footed throne affirms fearlessness as her foundation. Together, every element declares Tara's essential promise: she hears, she rises, she comes.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Tara Tantra proclaims: "Tarayasi bhavāt tasmāt Tārā ity abhidhīyase" — "Because you liberate beings from existence, you are called Tara." This statue embodies that living vow. The Newar master artisans of Patan, Nepal — keepers of an unbroken 1,500-year tradition — seal that sacred promise into copper through the ancient lost wax (cire perdue) process.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha”
Meaning: "Om, Tara, Swift Liberator, She Who Removes All Fear, Svaha."
Chanting this mantra before the statue invokes Tara's immediate compassionate presence, dissolves fear and obstacles, and draws her swift blessings of protection, healing, and liberation into your life and sacred space.
