Why This Statue?
This White Tara statue is a masterwork of polychrome Newar artistry that simply stops the breath. Standing over 13 inches tall, the pearlescent white body is painted with exceptional precision — delicate facial features, jeweled eyes on the palms and soles, a luminous third eye, and rich crimson and forest-green robes beneath gold-plated crown and ornaments. Flowering lotus stems flank her shoulders; turquoise and coral inlays jewel her crown and necklace. The multi-tiered lotus throne in crimson, green, and gold adds dramatic, altar-worthy grandeur. This is devotional sculpture at museum quality.
Who Is White Tara?
White Tara, (Tibetan: Dölkar)— means "White Liberatrix." Known in Sanskrit as Sita Tara, she is the form of Tara associated with longevity, healing, and compassionate wisdom. Distinguished by seven eyes — one on her forehead, one in each palm, and one on each sole — White Tara perceives suffering in all directions simultaneously, responding with tireless, unconditional care.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The finely painted face carries the seven eyes of omniscient compassion — the third eye at the forehead and painted eyes in both open palms radiate all-seeing awareness. The right hand rests over the right knee in Varada Mudra, the supreme gesture of boon-granting. The left hand rises in Vitarka Mudra, holding a triple lotus stem symbolizing the purity of past, present, and future. She sits in full lotus (padmasana) on a richly painted double lotus throne, embodying serene, inexhaustible maternal protection.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The white body represents the purity of the awakened mind and the clarity of compassion untainted by ego. Seven eyes affirm that her compassionate gaze misses nothing, reaches everywhere. The lotus stems flanking her shoulders declare wisdom and purity always in bloom. Turquoise inlays channel healing energy; coral protects vital life force. The multi-colored lotus throne grounds celestial grace in earthly beauty, making every glance at this statue a moment of quiet healing.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Tara Tantra teaches: "Tārā mātā jagat sarvasya" — "Tara is the mother of all the world." This statue gives that eternal truth a permanent, radiant home. The Newar master artisans of Patan, Nepal — custodians of an unbroken 1,500-year living tradition — pour that boundless maternal intention into every lost wax cast with devotional care and precision.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Tare Tuttare Ture Mama Ayuh Punya Jnana Pustim Kuru Svaha”
Meaning: "Om, Tara, Swift Liberator, Increase My Life, Merit, And Wisdom, Svaha."
Chanting this mantra before the statue invokes White Tara's healing blessings, extends life force, purifies illness and obstacles, and fills the practitioner's mind and body with her boundless, luminous grace.
