Who is 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje?
The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, known in Tibetan as Karma Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (1924-1981), was the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Recognized as the sixteenth incarnation in an unbroken line of enlightened masters spanning over 900 years, he became a global ambassador for Tibetan Buddhism, establishing dharma centers worldwide.
Iconographic Features and Posture
The Karmapa sits in padmasana upon a lotus throne, embodying meditative stability. His hands rest in dharmachakra mudra, the teaching gesture symbolizing the turning of the dharma wheel. The serene, youthful face reflects compassionate wisdom, with gentle eyes gazing forward in blessing. The distinctive five-pointed Black Crown (although rendered in gold) represents his spiritual authority as the manifestation of all enlightened activity.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
This statue represents the living transmission of enlightened wisdom through incarnation lineages. The Black Crown symbolizes Avalokiteshvara's enlightened presence, while the teaching gesture demonstrates the Karmapa's tireless dedication to spreading Buddhist teachings and benefiting all sentient beings across cultural boundaries.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Karmapa embodies "Karma" (enlightened activity) and preserves the Mahamudra teachings—the Great Seal pointing directly to the mind's true nature, beyond conceptual elaboration.
Sacred Mantra
“Karmapa Chenno”
This heartfelt prayer means "Karmapa, think of me" or "Karmapa, care for me," invoking the 16th Karmapa's blessing presence and compassionate guidance for all practitioners on the path to liberation.
