Palden Lhamo | The Wrathful Queen Who Rides the Ocean of Blood, Handcrafted in Nepal
Terrifying, magnificent, and profoundly sacred — this handcrafted Palden Lhamo statue is an extraordinary feat of Newari artistry, depicting Tibet's supreme female protector deity astride her mule mount in a blazing tableau of wrathful compassion.
Why This Statue?
This is a statement piece of exceptional rarity and complexity. The multi-figure composition — Palden Lhamo riding her mule flanked by two wrathful attendants, all set within a sweeping crimson-and-gold flaming arch — represents one of the most ambitious and technically demanding subjects in Himalayan sacred sculpture. Who Is Palden Lhamo?
Palden Lhamo, meaning "Glorious Goddess" — is the only female among the eight principal Dharmapalas (protector deities) of Tibetan Buddhism. She is the special protectress of Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, and the Gelug tradition, venerated as the wrathful emanation of Saraswati and the consort of Mahakala.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
Three bulging, blood-rimmed eyes blaze across a midnight-blue face contorted in fierce, protective fury — a face crowned with a gold and jeweled tiara and framed by wild, flame-like hair. Her right hand raises a gold khatvanga staff topped with a skull, while her left holds a skull cup brimming with blood and the entrails of obstructors. Riding sidesaddle upon her white mule across a sea of blood and fat, she embodies relentless, wrathful forward momentum — protection that never rests.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Palden Lhamo's dark blue body represents the limitless expanse of the dharmakaya. Her mule — saddled with the skin of her own son, whom she sacrificed to protect the dharma — is among the most powerful symbols of absolute commitment to liberation above all worldly bonds. The flaming aureole declares her wisdom-fire consuming all obstacles threatening the sacred teachings.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Kangyur records Palden Lhamo's oath before the Buddha: "I shall protect the doctrine until samsara is emptied." Her Sanskrit counterpart Shri Devi appears in the Devi Mahatmya as the supreme cosmic feminine force that defeats all darkness threatening sacred order.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Shri Devi Hum Phat”
"Om" opens the gateway of sacred presence; "Shri" honors her glorious and auspicious nature as the Glorious Goddess; "Devi" calls upon her as the supreme feminine divine force; "Hum" activates her indestructible vajra mind; "Phat" strikes and instantly shatters all obstacles, negative forces, and enemies of the dharma threatening practitioners and sacred lineages under her protection.
