Why This Statue?
Compact at 21.5 cm yet substantial at 1.86 Kg, this statue sits comfortably on an altar, desk, or meditation shelf. The lost wax method preserves every delicate robe pattern, beaded lotus petal, and serene facial line, while the deep oxidized copper finish lends an antique, museum-like glow that deepens with time. Understated and timeless, it suits seasoned practitioners and collectors seeking an authentic Nepalese heirloom.
Who Is Shakyamuni Buddha?
Shakyamuni, "Sage of the Shakyas," was born Prince Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, Nepal, before renouncing royal life and awakening beneath the Bodhi tree. Tibetans call him Shakya Thubpa, the historical Buddha whose teachings illuminate the path from suffering to liberation.
Eyes, Hands, and Posture: Key Features
His half-closed eyes gaze gently downward, balancing deep meditation with compassionate awareness. His right hand reaches over the knee, fingertips touching the ground in the earth-touching gesture, while his left rests in his lap holding an alms bowl. He sits in the vajra posture upon a layered lotus throne, spine upright, shoulders relaxed, embodying unshakable stability and peace.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The earth-touching gesture, Bhumisparsha Mudra, recalls the moment Siddhartha, challenged by Mara, called the earth to witness his merit. It symbolizes courage, truth, and unwavering resolve. The alms bowl represents renunciation and humility, while the lotus throne signifies purity arising from worldly mud.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Dhammapada teaches, "You yourself must strive; the Buddhas only point the way." In Sanskrit, Buddha means "awakened one," reminding us that enlightenment is a potential within every being. Shakyamuni's example inspires practitioners to cultivate prajñā (wisdom) and karuṇā (compassion) together.
Sacred Mantra
"Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha"
Chanting it cultivates peace, wisdom, and steady, compassionate strength. Recite it daily before this statue to invite calm and clarity.
