Why This Statue?
What distinguishes this statue is its extraordinary gemstone work — hand-carved turquoise, coral, and lapis stones individually set across the shoulders, lotus throne, and base, creating a mosaic of sacred color unlike any ordinary Buddha statue. The warm 24K gold gilding, intricately engraved robes, and crystal ushnisha crown elevate this piece into a rare category of Nepalese masterwork.
Who Is Sakyamuni Buddha?
Sakyamuni Buddha, revered in Tibetan as Shakya Thubpa — "Sage of the Shakyas" — is the historical Buddha who renounced a royal life, sought truth through deep meditation, and attained complete enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. He is the root teacher of all Buddhist traditions and the timeless embodiment of awakened humanity.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
His hand-painted eyes are open and gently forward-gazing — luminous with the clarity of one fully awake to reality. His right hand reaches earthward in Bhumisparsha Mudra, calling the earth to witness his supreme enlightenment, while his left rests serenely in his lap cradling an alms bowl. Seated in padmasana upon a jewel-encrusted double lotus throne, every detail affirms an unshakeable, sovereign awakening.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The earth-touching gesture marks the pivotal moment Siddhartha became the Buddha — victorious over Mara and all delusion. The alms bowl reflects his life of renunciation and simplicity. The richly inlaid lotus throne — blooming with turquoise, coral, and lapis — represents the purity of an enlightened mind rising effortlessly above the mud of worldly existence.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Dhammapada teaches: "The mind is everything — what you think, you become." His Sanskrit title Tathāgata — "Thus Gone One" — points to one who has arrived at and departed from ultimate truth simultaneously, embodying the perfect freedom of a mind no longer bound by saṃsāra.
Sacred Mantra
“Om muni muni mahamuni sakyamuni soha”
"Om, sage, sage, great sage, Sage of the Shakyas, svaha." Reciting this mantra honors Sakyamuni's enlightened presence, purifies the mind of obscurations, and deepens the practitioner's connection to the living wisdom of the awakened state.
