Who Is Green Tara?
Green Tara — known in Tibetan as Dölma Jangku, is the beloved goddess of swift compassion and protection in Vajrayana Buddhism. Born from Avalokiteshvara's compassionate tears, she vowed to remain in feminine form until all beings achieve liberation, becoming the most accessible and responsive of all bodhisattvas.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
The hand-painted eyes — elongated and half-lidded — gaze with alert, compassionate awareness, ever-watchful of suffering beings. Her right hand extends in Varada Mudra (the boon-granting gesture), her left holds a blue utpala lotus stem in full bloom. Seated in Lalitasana — royal ease posture — with her right foot extended and ready to rise, she embodies active, immediate compassion rather than passive contemplation.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Green Tara's emerald hue (represented here in gold) symbolizes active enlightened activity and the wind element — swift, pervasive, and unstoppable. The utpala lotus rising beside her represents wisdom blooming untouched above worldly suffering. Her ornate crown and jeweled adornments reflect her status as queen among the twenty-one Taras.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Tara Tantra proclaims: "She who ferries beings across the ocean of existence." Her name Tārā derives from the Sanskrit root tṛ — to cross, to liberate — affirming her eternal role as humanity's compassionate ferryman.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha”
This beloved mantra invokes Tara's threefold liberation. "Om" opens universal awareness; "Tare" frees from samsara; "Tuttare" dissolves fear and obstacles; "Ture" grants swift healing; "Soha" establishes the blessing firmly within the heart.
