Who Is Dzambhala?
Dzambhala is the Buddhist deity of wealth and generosity, revered across Tibetan, Newar, and Vajrayana traditions. He embodies the compassionate flow of abundance, ensuring that prosperity serves dharmic purpose rather than mere accumulation.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
Dzambhala's wide, commanding eyes radiate fierce compassion — penetrating illusion and awakening awareness. His left hand clasps a jewel-spewing mongoose (nehulay), symbolizing the release of spiritual and material wealth. His right hand holds a wish-fulfilling jewel. Seated in lalitasana — the royal ease posture — upon an elaborate Singhasan (lion throne), his portly, golden form embodies fulfillment, contentment, and sovereign generosity.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The lion throne (Singhasan) signifies royal authority and fearlessness. The mongoose pours forth jewels endlessly — representing liberation from scarcity. The turquoise and coral gemstones embedded throughout reflect the Himalayan sacred color language: turquoise for sky-wisdom, coral for vital life-force energy.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
"Wealth properly acquired and generously shared purifies the soul." In the Vajrayana path, Dzambhala's blessings flow not to the greedy, but to those who cultivate dana — selfless giving.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Dzambhala Dzalendraye Svaha”
Meaning: "Om, I invoke Dzambhala, the lord of wealth, Svaha (so be it)."
