Why This Statue?

This Sakyamuni Buddha sculpture represents the devotion of Nepalese Buddhist artistry. The 24k gold gilding on the face creates an ethereal luminosity that captures the Buddha's enlightened radiance. The copper body provides exceptional durability while allowing master craftsmen to achieve stunning detail in every fold of the robes and finger gesture. The ornate painting work on the robes features traditional Buddhist symbols and cloud motifs that demonstrate hours of meticulous handwork. The multi-colored lotus throne base, with its precise petal work and geometric patterns, showcases the remarkable skill passed through generations of artisan families. The substantial weight ensures stability and presence, while the moderate size makes it perfect for personal altars, meditation rooms, or display collections. This is an investment in authentic Himalayan sacred art.

Who is Sakyamuni Buddha?

Sakyamuni Buddha, known in Tibetan as Shakya Thubpa, is the historical Buddha who lived approximately 2,500 years ago in ancient India. Born Prince Siddhartha Gautama, he renounced his royal life to seek the end of human suffering. After years of spiritual practice, he attained perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. His teachings, known as the Dharma, form the foundation of Buddhism practiced worldwide today. Sakyamuni means "Sage of the Shakya Clan," honoring both his royal lineage and his transcendent wisdom.

Sacred Iconography: Posture and Mudras

The Buddha sits in padmasana (full lotus position), symbolizing unshakable stability and perfect meditation. His serene facial expression, framed by the golden face, embodies the peace beyond all suffering. The elongated earlobes remind us of his princely past when he wore heavy jewelry, while their emptiness signifies his renunciation. His right hand extends downward in the bhumisparsha mudra (earth-touching gesture), recalling the moment he called the earth to witness his enlightenment against Mara's challenges. His left hand rests in his lap holding an alms bowl in dhyana mudra (meditation gesture), representing the concentration that leads to awakening. The ornately decorated robes, traditionally simple monk's garments, are here elevated with intricate cloud patterns and dharma symbols, bridging the historical and the celestial.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

This statue embodies the core of Buddhist realization. The earth-touching mudra represents the Buddha's victory over illusion and his unshakeable commitment to truth. The lotus throne symbolizes purity—rising unstained from the mud of samsara. The ushnisha (cranial bump) atop his head signifies expanded consciousness and spiritual wisdom. His peaceful countenance demonstrates the equanimity achieved through enlightenment. Every element teaches: his closed eyes show inward focus, his straight spine represents alertness, and his grounded posture reminds practitioners that enlightenment happens here and now.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The ancient Pali texts record the Buddha's first words after enlightenment: "Through countless births in samsara, I have sought the builder of this house but found him not. Now, O builder, you are seen. You shall build no house again." This statue captures that victorious moment. In Sanskrit, he is called "Tathagata"—one who has "thus gone" to enlightenment. The Dhammapada teaches: "Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace." His silent presence speaks this truth.

Sacred Mantra

“Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha”

This powerful mantra invokes Sakyamuni Buddha's blessings and wisdom. "Om" represents the universal sound of enlightenment. "Muni" means "sage" or "silent one," repeated to honor the Buddha's profound realization. "Maha Muniye" translates to "great sage," celebrating his supreme accomplishment. "Soha" means "may it be established" or "hail," sealing the prayer.
