Why This Statue?
This four-armed Chengresi is one of the most visually arresting sacred statues a collector will ever encounter. Fully gilded in 24K gold and standing over 13 inches tall, it radiates a warm, celestial luminosity that commands immediate reverence. The jeweled five-pointed crown, turquoise and red coral inlays across the chest and arms, painted face, and scrolled lotus armrests all speak to exceptional Newar artistry. The richly carved double lotus throne grounds this golden vision with ornate gravitas. At under 10 lbs, it is elegantly sized for any altar. This is compassion made permanently, brilliantly visible.
Who Is Chengresi?
Chengresi, (Tibetan: Chenrezig)— means "One Who Gazes Upon All Beings with Compassion." Known in Sanskrit as Avalokiteśvara, he is the Bodhisattva of boundless compassion, revered as the patron deity of Tibet and beloved across all Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions. The Dalai Lama is considered his living emanation.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The finely painted eyes gaze with serene, all-encompassing tenderness — seeing every being without exception. The primary two hands join at the heart in Anjali Mudra, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel (chintamani) — the gesture of prayer and reverence for all life. The upper right hand holds a crystal mala for counting compassionate prayers; the upper left raises a lotus flower (utpala), symbolizing purity rising through suffering. He sits serenely in full lotus (padmasana) upon a double lotus throne, radiating stability and inexhaustible loving presence.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The four arms represent compassion reaching in all directions simultaneously — no being left outside its embrace. The wish-fulfilling jewel embodies the aspiration to fulfill every being's deepest needs. The lotus declares that compassion blooms most fully from within suffering, not apart from it. Turquoise inlays invoke healing; coral channels vital protection. The 24K gold body itself symbolizes the incorruptible, radiant nature of compassion — it never tarnishes, never exhausts.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
Karuṇā param pāramiṭā — "Compassion is the supreme perfection." This ancient Sanskrit teaching is the living essence of every Chengresi statue ever crafted. The Newar master artisans of Patan, Nepal — custodians of an unbroken 1,500-year sculptural lineage — pour that supreme intention into every stage of the 24K gold lost wax (cire perdue) casting process.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Mani Padme Hum”
Meaning: "Om, The Jewel In The Lotus, Hum."
The most universally chanted mantra in Buddhism, it encapsulates the entire path: compassion (mani, jewel) inseparable from wisdom (padme, lotus). Chanting before this statue opens the heart, purifies all six realms of suffering, and draws Chengresi's boundless compassionate blessings directly into your life and practice.
