Why This Statue?
This Chengresi is an altar centerpiece of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. The copper body, cast using the ancient lost wax method, is finished in genuine 24K gold gilding that radiates warm, sovereign luminosity from every surface. Turquoise and red coral inlays punctuate the ornate lotus throne and jewellery with vivid bursts of colour. Gold and acrylic hand-painted facial features — particularly his striking, compassionate eyes — deliver a presence of lifelike spiritual intensity that instantly transforms any meditation or sacred space.
Who Is Chengresi?
Chengresi, Avalokiteśvara in Sanskrit, is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion and the most universally beloved deity in all of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He arose from a tear of deepest grief, shed when Avalokiteśvara witnessed the ocean of beings still drowning in suffering. He vowed never to enter final nirvāṇa until every last sentient being is liberated. The Dalai Lama is regarded as his living human embodiment on earth.
Key Features: Posture, Eyes, and Hands
Chengresi sits in padmasana — the full lotus posture — radiating unshakeable, patient compassion. His gold and acrylic hand-painted eyes gaze forward with serene, penetrating warmth, simultaneously present to every being without exception or preference. His two primary hands are pressed together at the heart in añjali mudrā, tenderly cradling the precious cintāmaṇi wish-fulfilling jewel — the embodiment of bodhicitta held as his most treasured offering to all beings. His upper right hand holds a crystal prayer mālā, counting the liberation of beings one by one, while his upper left raises a blooming lotus, symbolising enlightened purity flowering within saṃsāra.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Chengresi's four arms reach across the four immeasurables — loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity — embracing every realm of existence simultaneously. The cintāmaṇi jewel pressed at his heart represents bodhicitta, the most precious aspiration in all of Buddhism: to attain enlightenment solely for the liberation of others. His gilded form reflects the sambhogakāya — the inexhaustible bliss body of a fully awakened being radiating compassion without pause across all worlds and all times.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra proclaims: "From the pores of Avalokiteśvara's body, entire Buddha fields arise; beings who merely hear his name are freed from rebirth in lower realms." The revered master Jamgön Kongtrul taught: "Chengresi's compassion is not other than the natural warmth of your own awakened mind — to call his name is to remember who you truly are."
Sacred Mantra
“Om Mani Padme Hum”
"Salutations to the jewel in the lotus — may the inseparable union of compassion and wisdom purify all obscurations and fully awaken the enlightened heart within every being without exception."
