Why This Statue?
This extraordinary Chengresi statue represents museum-quality craftsmanship rarely found outside specialized collections. The oxidized copper finish creates a timeless, antique appearance that deepens the statue's spiritual gravitas. Contrasting gold and silver plating highlights specific elements—the crown, jewelry, and sacred details—creating stunning visual depth. The substantial 5.71-kilogram weight ensures stability and presence, while the elaborate base featuring protective elephants and the Dharma wheel adds layers of symbolism. At 37 centimeters tall with an impressive 35.2-centimeter width, this piece commands attention without overwhelming spaces. The intricate hand-carved details visible in every fold of fabric, each ornament, and the meticulously crafted halo demonstrate hundreds of hours of devoted labor by master craftsmen preserving ancient Newari traditions.
Who is Chengresi?
Chengresi, known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit and Spyan-ras-gzigs in Tibetan, embodies the infinite compassion of all Buddhas. As the most beloved bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism, he has vowed to remain in the cycle of existence until every sentient being achieves liberation. The Dalai Lama is considered his earthly manifestation, continuing his compassionate mission throughout generations.
Divine Iconography and Posture
Chengresi sits in lalitasana, royal ease, upon a lotus throne supported by guardian elephants representing stability and wisdom. His right hand rests in varada mudra, the gesture of granting wishes and bestowing blessings, while his left hand holds a lotus flower symbolizing purity. His downcast eyes express compassionate awareness of worldly suffering. The elaborate crown contains a small meditation Buddha, representing his spiritual origin from Buddha Amitabha. The magnificent flaming aureole signifies his enlightened energy radiating outward to benefit all beings.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Every element carries profound meaning: the elephants represent strength in dharma practice, the throne symbolizes rising above suffering, and the jeweled ornaments reflect spiritual wealth. His relaxed posture demonstrates enlightenment achieved while remaining accessible to those who call upon him. The oxidized finish represents timeless compassion transcending worldly concerns.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Karandavyuha Sutra states that Chengresi's compassion pervades all realms. Tibetan tradition teaches that his tears of compassion for suffering beings formed Tara, the female bodhisattva of liberation.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Mani Padme Hum”
This universally revered mantra invokes Chengresi's boundless compassion. "Mani" means jewel, "Padme" means lotus—together symbolizing the jewel of enlightened mind within the lotus of wisdom, purifying body, speech, and mind while cultivating universal compassion.
