Who is Ksitigarbha?

Ksitigarbha, known in Tibetan as Sa-yi snying-po, is the Bodhisattva who vowed never to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied. His name means "Earth Treasury," signifying his role as guardian of earth and protector of beings in hell realms. He made the profound vow to save all suffering beings between Sakyamuni Buddha's passing and Maitreya Buddha's arrival, particularly protecting children, travelers, and those in the bardo state after death.

Sacred Iconography: Hands, Crown, and Posture

Ksitigarbha sits in padmasana, symbolizing unshakable commitment to his vows. His ornate five-pointed diadem inlaid with turquoise and coral represents mastery over the five wisdoms. His gentle eyes gaze downward while watching over suffering beings. His right hand extends in varada mudra, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel that grants spiritual wishes. His left hand gracefully holds a lotus flower, symbolizing purity emerging from samsara's mud.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

This statue embodies boundless compassion and infinite patience. The wish-fulfilling jewel represents his power to grant liberation, illuminating ignorance's darkness. The lotus symbolizes the promise that all beings can achieve enlightenment regardless of karmic obstacles. His peaceful expression teaches that genuine compassion remains unshaken by suffering's magnitude, and that patience and determination accomplish even impossible vows.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The Ksitigarbha Sutra records his vow: "If I do not go to hell to help suffering beings, who else will? If the hells are not emptied, I vow not to become a Buddha." This embodies the bodhisattva ideal of placing others' liberation first. The sutra teaches: "Remember my name and you shall be saved from suffering."

Sacred Mantra

“Om Ha Ha Ha Vismaye Svaha”

This mantra invokes Ksitigarbha's protection. "Om" represents enlightenment's universal sound. "Ha Ha Ha" symbolizes wisdom's joyful laughter and obstacle dissolution. "Vismaye" means "wondrous," celebrating his miraculous compassionate vows. "Svaha" means "so be it," establishing the mantra's power. Reciting this connects practitioners to his protective energy and purifies negative karma.
