Who is Sakyamuni Buddha?
Sakyamuni Buddha, known in Tibetan as Shakya Thubpa, is the historical Buddha who attained enlightenment 2,500 years ago. Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama, he renounced worldly pleasures to discover the path to liberation from suffering, becoming the founder of Buddhism.
Iconographic Features and Posture
The Buddha sits in padmasana (full lotus position), embodying perfect meditation. His right hand touches the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, calling the earth to witness his enlightenment, while his left hand rests in dhyana mudra, holding an alms bowl symbolizing spiritual nourishment. The serene half-closed eyes express deep meditative absorption, and the ushnisha (cranial protrusion) signifies supreme wisdom.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
This statue represents the moment of Buddha's enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, when he conquered Mara's temptations. The earth-touching gesture symbolizes unshakeable determination and victory over ignorance, inspiring practitioners toward their own awakening.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Buddha taught: "Sabbe sankhara anicca" - all conditioned things are impermanent. This statue serves as a reminder of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path leading to liberation.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha”
This powerful mantra means "homage to the sage of the Sakyas," invoking Sakyamuni Buddha's enlightened qualities of wisdom and compassion into one's practice.
