Why This Statue?
This Amitayus is a masterpiece of devotional art. At 51 cm tall and nearly 9 kg, it commands presence with its substantial weight and full-bodied proportions. The 24K fire gilding produces an incomparable warm luminosity, impossible to replicate through cold gilding. Every surface reveals intentional craftsmanship: lapis lazuli borders framing the ornate halo, coral and turquoise inlays jeweling the crown and ornaments, and finely incised robes with crosshatch patterning. This is a sacred object built to last lifetimes.
Who Is Amitayus?
Amitayus, (Tibetan: Tsepame), the Buddha of Infinite Life, is a sambhogakaya manifestation of Amitabha — the embodiment of boundless longevity and merit. Widely venerated across Tibetan and Himalayan traditions, he is invoked to extend life, remove obstacles to long life, and accumulate the merit necessary for liberation.
Iconographic Features
The figure sits in padmasana — full lotus posture — conveying unshakeable meditative stability. The hands rest in dhyana mudra, cradling the amrita kalasha, the vase of long-life nectar, Amitayus's singular identifying attribute. The half-closed eyes radiate serene inward awareness. A five-jewel crown, flowing scarves, and elaborately painted robes mark his sambhogakaya splendor. The tiered lotus throne with its rounded petal base grounds the composition with devotional weight.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The amrita kalasha overflows with the nectar of deathlessness — a direct symbol of the practitioner's aspiration to attain a long, meaningful life in service of all beings. The fire gold reflects pure Buddha-nature: unchanging, incorruptible, luminous. The lapis lazuli crown echoes Amitabha's western pure realm, Sukhavati.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
Ayur-jñāna-sambhava — "Born from the union of lifespan and wisdom." In Vajrayana teaching, long life is not sought for its own sake but to complete the path. As expressed in countless longevity pujas: "May I live long to benefit beings."
Sacred Mantra
“Om Amarani Jivantiye Svaha”
"Om — O Immortal One, grant life, Svaha."
This mantra of Amitayus is recited in longevity practices to invoke the blessings of boundless life, remove hindrances, and dedicate merit for the long life of teachers and loved ones.
