Who is Sakyamuni Buddha?
Sakyamuni Buddha, known in Tibetan as Shakya Thubpa, is the historical Buddha who attained enlightenment 2,500 years ago in Bodh Gaya, India. Born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama, he renounced worldly life to seek liberation from suffering. After years of meditation, he discovered the Middle Way and achieved complete enlightenment, becoming the Buddha—the Awakened One who taught the path to liberation.
Sacred Features and Enlightenment Posture
Sakyamuni's serene countenance displays half-closed eyes radiating profound wisdom and boundless compassion. His right hand extends in bhumisparsha mudra—the earth-touching gesture—calling the earth to witness his enlightenment, while his left hand rests in dhyana mudra holding an alms bowl, symbolizing meditation and renunciation. The blue painted ushnisha represents supreme wisdom, while the urna signifies spiritual vision. Seated in lotus posture upon an elaborate lotus throne, his form embodies the moment of perfect awakening.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The earth-touching mudra commemorates Buddha's victory over Mara and delusions at the moment of enlightenment. His golden body represents the radiance of awakened wisdom, while the lotus throne symbolizes purity rising above worldly attachments. The carved robes signify renunciation and monastic discipline leading to liberation.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Dhammapada teaches Buddha's core wisdom: "The mind is everything; what you think, you become." Sakyamuni's enlightenment demonstrates that liberation from suffering is achievable through understanding the Four Noble Truths and walking the Eightfold Path.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Muni Muni Maha Muniye Soha”
This sacred mantra honors Sakyamuni Buddha's enlightened qualities. "Muni" means sage, "Maha Muniye" celebrates the great sage, and "Soha" establishes the blessing, invoking the historical Buddha's wisdom and compassion while inspiring practitioners toward their own awakening and liberation from suffering.
