Why This Statue?
This exceptional Ekadashi Lokheswor statue showcases the devotion of Nepalese metalworking mastery. The 24K gold gilding creates a luminous contrast against the antique copper patina, while the impressive height commands reverent attention. Each of the eleven faces displays unique expressions meticulously hand-carved by skilled artisans. The substantial weight ensures durability, and the ornate lotus throne base features exquisite detailing that elevates this piece into an heirloom-quality spiritual treasure.
Who is Ekadashi Lokheswor?
Ekadashi Lokheswor represents the eleven-faced form of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. This manifestation emerged when Avalokiteshvara witnessed countless suffering beings and his head split from overwhelming compassion. Amitabha Buddha then blessed him with eleven faces to observe and relieve suffering throughout the universe.
Divine Features and Posture
The statue's primary face radiates serene compassion, while the ten additional heads cascade upward in diminishing tiers, crowned by Amitabha Buddha's peaceful countenance. The six graceful arms extend in blessing mudras—the primary hands likely holding sacred implements, while others gesture protection and wish-granting. Standing in tribhanga (triple-bend posture), the deity's elegant stance conveys divine movement and accessibility, adorned with celestial ornaments and flowing dhoti.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
This eleven-faced form symbolizes omnidirectional compassion—the ability to simultaneously perceive suffering in all ten directions plus the center. Each face represents different aspects of wisdom and compassion needed to guide beings from various realms toward enlightenment, embodying the limitless capacity to help all sentient beings.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Karandavyuha Sutra teaches: "Avalokiteshvara's compassion extends to all beings without discrimination." His eleven faces manifest the bodhisattva vow: "I shall not attain final nirvana until all beings are liberated."
Sacred Mantra
“Om Mani Padme Hum”
This universal mantra means "Om, the Jewel in the Lotus, Hum," invoking Avalokiteshvara's compassionate essence. It purifies suffering, cultivates loving-kindness, and opens the heart to enlightenment's infinite possibilities.
