Why this Statue?

The intricate carving work and fire-gilding techniques represent centuries-old Newari artistic traditions, creating a sacred vessel worthy of devotion and meditation.

Who is Green Tara?

Green Tara, the "Swift Liberator" and beloved mother goddess of Tibetan Buddhism, is immortalized by master Nepalese artisans in this breathtaking sculpture. Known as the female Buddha of enlightened activity, she embodies immediate compassion and fearless protection.

Sacred Posture & Expression

Tara sits in lalitasana (royal ease), her right leg gracefully extended, symbolizing readiness to spring into action to help all beings. Her luminous eyes, painted with divine serenity, gaze upon the world with infinite compassion. The right hand displays Varada Mudra (a boon-granting gesture), while the left hand holds a blooming utpala flower in Vitarka Mudra, representing the unfolding of wisdom and the power to grant wishes.

Symbolism and Meaning

The ornate five-pointed crown represents mastery over the five Buddha families, while lotus flowers blooming beside her shoulders signify purity emerging from worldly suffering. Her youthful, emerald-tinted complexion symbolizes active compassion and the vigor of enlightened activity. The flowing silk garments and precious jewels reflect her status as a celestial bodhisattva who chose earthly form to serve humanity.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

In Sanskrit, "Tara" means "star" and "she who ferries across"—guiding souls across the ocean of suffering to liberation. She represents the perfection of wisdom (Prajna-paramita) in active manifestation, embodying the Buddhist principle that enlightenment serves all beings.

Sacred Mantra

"Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha"
