Why This Statue?
This statue is defined by its breathtaking ornate halo — a sweeping mandorla of golden filigree scrollwork set with vibrant turquoise and coral inlays that frame the Buddha in celestial splendor. At 7.12 kg, its substantial weight reflects the density of quality copper and masterful gilding. The individually hand-carved gemstones across the robes, shoulders, and base make every inch a meditation in sacred craftsmanship.
Who Is Sakyamuni Buddha?
Sakyamuni Buddha, known in Tibetan as Shakya Thubpa — "Sage of the Shakyas" — is the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who abandoned royal luxury, undertook profound spiritual austerities, and attained complete enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. Revered as the root teacher of all Buddhist paths, he remains humanity's supreme guide to liberation.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
His hand-painted eyes are serenely half-open — resting in the luminous awareness of perfect awakening, seeing all without grasping anything. His right hand extends earthward in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-witnessing gesture that marks the exact moment of his enlightenment, while his left cradles an alms bowl. Seated unshakeably in padmasana upon a jeweled lotus throne, his posture is the living form of indestructible inner peace.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The ornate halo radiates the boundless light of Buddha's omniscient awareness. The earth-touching hand affirms victory over Mara — over doubt, desire, and delusion. The alms bowl embodies renunciation. The gemstone-studded lotus throne — rising in turquoise, coral, and lapis — declares the timeless truth: purity and wisdom arise from within, untouched by worldly conditions.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Majjhima Nikāya records his own words: "I teach one thing only — suffering and the end of suffering." His Sanskrit epithet Tathāgata — "Thus Gone One" — honors one who has completely traversed saṃsāra, arriving at the unborn, undying, unchanging ground of all existence.
Sacred Mantra
“Om muni muni mahamuni sakyamuni soha”
"Om, sage, sage, great sage, Sage of the Shakyas, svaha." Chanting this mantra invokes Sakyamuni's enlightened wisdom, clears mental obscurations, and guides the practitioner steadily toward the clarity and freedom of the awakened mind.
