Why This Statue?
This commanding oxidized copper Mitrugpa statue stops you the moment you see it. Rising nearly 20 inches tall, it is adorned with a jeweled five-pointed crown, turquoise and coral inlays, and an elaborately beaded necklace — details that elevate it far beyond ordinary Buddhist statuary. The warm antique copper finish, achieved through careful oxidization, develops rich character over time. Every ornament, scroll, and robe fold was shaped entirely by hand using the ancient lost wax method. For devotees and collectors alike, this is a sacred treasure of rare distinction.
Who Is Mitrugpa?
Mitrugpa, "The Imperturbable One." Known in Sanskrit as Akshobhya, he is one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas, presiding over the eastern realm Abhirati. Mitrugpa embodies mirror-like wisdom, transforming anger and aggression into clarity and unshakeable equanimity.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The serene downcast eyes radiate perfect stillness and indestructible calm. The right hand reaches forward in Bhumisparsha Mudra — earth-touching — affirming enlightened resolve. The left hand rests in Dhyana Mudra, a symbol of indestructible truth. Flanked by elegant scrolling armrests and draped in finely carved flowing robes, he sits in full lotus (padmasana) upon a double lotus throne, embodying an unshakeable presence.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The five-pointed crown represents the Five Dhyani Buddhas — Mitrugpa's sovereignty among them. The lotus throne embodies purity untouched by worldly confusion. Turquoise and coral inlays invoke healing and vitality. Together, this statue is a portal of purification and transformation for any sacred space.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Akshobhya Vyuha Sutra declares that merely seeing, touching, or venerating Akshobhya's image plants indestructible seeds of liberation. The Newar master craftsmen of Patan, Nepal — custodians of a living 1,500-year tradition — encode that sacred intention into every hammer strike and chisel mark of the lost wax process.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Akshobhya Hum”
"Om, The Imperturbable One, Hum."
Chanting this mantra before the statue purifies the root poison of anger, stabilizes the mind, and invokes Mitrugpa's mirror-like wisdom — transforming turbulence into clarity, and confusion into the still, unbreakable peace of awakening.
