Who Is Chengresi?
Chengresi — known in Tibetan as Chenrezig and in Sanskrit as Avalokiteśvara — is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion. Revered across Tibetan Buddhism, Nepal, and beyond, he embodies the boundless wish to liberate all sentient beings from suffering.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Sacred Posture
The serene, half-lidded eyes radiate loving awareness — gazing upon all beings without judgment. His primary two hands press together at the heart in Anjali Mudra (the gesture of reverence), holding a wish-fulfilling jewel. The upper right hand carries a crystal mala, symbolizing continuous prayer; the upper left holds a lotus flower, representing purity untouched by worldly suffering. Seated in Vajraparyanka (full lotus posture) upon a double-lotus throne, his upright form embodies meditative stability and unwavering compassion.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The four arms represent compassion extending equally in all directions — across all realms, all time. The lotus throne signifies enlightenment rising from the mud of samsara. The gemstones are not merely ornamental; turquoise represents healing, coral symbolizes life force, and lapis reflects wisdom's depth.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Karaṇḍavyūha Sūtra proclaims that Avalokiteśvara's compassion is so vast, the sun and moon are said to have emerged from his eyes. In the Tibetan tradition, he is called "The Great Compassionate One" — the patron deity of Tibet itself.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Mani Padme Hum”
"The jewel is in the lotus." This six-syllable mantra purifies the six realms of suffering and embodies Chengresi's entire teaching: that wisdom (the jewel) and compassion (the lotus) are inseparable, and that liberation lives within every sentient being.
