Who is Chengresi?

Chengresi, known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the most revered deity in Tibetan Buddhism. His name means "The Lord Who Looks Down with Compassion." According to tradition, he vowed to liberate all sentient beings from suffering, and when he witnessed the vastness of suffering in the world, his head split into eleven pieces from grief. Amitabha Buddha reconstituted him with eleven heads to see all suffering and four arms to help all beings, embodying the infinite capacity for compassionate action.

Divine Features and Posture

Chengresi sits in padmasana (lotus posture) upon an ornate lotus throne, embodying meditative stability and purity. His four arms represent immeasurable love, compassion, joy, and equanimity. The primary hands are joined at the heart in anjali mudra, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel that grants spiritual and worldly wishes. His upper right hand holds a crystal mala (prayer beads) representing continuous recitation of mantras for all beings, while the left hand gracefully holds a blooming lotus flower symbolizing purity and enlightenment. His serene face features half-closed eyes of meditation and compassion, gazing with infinite kindness upon the suffering world. The elaborate five-pointed crown topped with Amitabha Buddha represents his spiritual lineage, while the flowing ornaments and silk garments express celestial majesty.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

This statue embodies universal compassion, the aspiration to liberate all beings, and the bodhisattva ideal of putting others before self. The wish-fulfilling jewel represents the enlightened mind that grants all wholesome wishes, while the lotus symbolizes spiritual purity rising from the mud of worldly existence. The prayer beads signify continuous practice and mindfulness. The turquoise inlays connect to healing energy and spiritual protection, while coral represents vitality and protection from negativity. Together, these elements create a powerful focal point for developing loving-kindness and compassionate action.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The Karandavyuha Sutra states: "Avalokiteshvara embodies the compassion of all Buddhas." The Lotus Sutra declares: "He who calls upon Avalokiteshvara shall be freed from danger." His Holiness the Dalai Lama, considered Chengresi's earthly manifestation, teaches: "Compassion is the root of all spiritual practice and the foundation of happiness."

Sacred Mantra

“Om Mani Padme Hum”

This sacred six-syllable mantra embodies the essence of compassion: "Om" purifies ego and pride; "Mani" (jewel) purifies jealousy and desire; "Padme" (lotus) purifies ignorance and attachment; "Hum" purifies hatred and aggression—together meaning "the jewel in the lotus," representing wisdom within compassion and the indivisibility of method and wisdom leading to enlightenment.
