Why This Statue?

This Medicine Buddha is immediately distinguished by its rare and sophisticated two-tone finish. The oxidized copper body develops a rich, layered bronze-brown patina of natural depth and gravitas, while the silver-plated monastic robe — intricately hand-carved with a precise woven lattice pattern — shimmers with cool, healing luminosity against the dark form. A delicately rendered silver lotus flower blooms at his right hand, adding further elegance to the composition. Cast using the ancient lost wax method at 28 cm tall and 3.44 kg, this piece rewards every close viewing with extraordinary artisan refinement.

Who Is Medicine Buddha?

Medicine Buddha, (Tibetan: Sangye Menla), Bhaiṣajyaguru in Sanskrit — is the Buddha of healing, medicine, and the complete elimination of suffering in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Before attaining Buddhahood, he made twelve great vows — to cure all illness, liberate beings from poverty and fear, and guide all who hear his name toward complete enlightenment. Revered from Tibet to Japan, he is the supreme physician of body, mind, and spirit, whose healing power transcends all ordinary medicine.

Key Features: Posture, Eyes, and Hands

Medicine Buddha sits in padmasana — the immovable full lotus posture — radiating the unshakeable stability of a mind completely healed and completely awakened. His finely hand-carved eyes are serenely half-closed in deep meditative composure, holding the steady, diagnostic gaze of a being who perceives the root cause of all suffering instantly and responds with boundless compassion. His right hand rests on his knee in varada mudrā, holding the stem of a silver arura — the myrobalan healing herb, the supreme medicine of Himalayan tradition — its blossoms rendered with delicate silver craftsmanship. His left hand rests in his lap cradling a healing nectar bowl, the vessel of liberation from all disease and obscuration.

Sacred Symbolism and Meaning

The oxidized bronze body of this Medicine Buddha carries its own quiet symbolism — the natural darkening of copper over time evokes the quality of ancient, tested, enduring healing wisdom that deepens rather than fades with age. The silver arura flower and woven silver robe represent the cooling, purifying quality of lunar healing energy — the precise antidote to the heat of illness, confusion, and karmic obscuration. Together, the dark bronze and luminous silver mirror the teaching that healing arises from the union of depth and clarity, darkness acknowledged and light restored.

Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom

The Bhaiṣajyaguruvaiḍūryaprabharāja Sūtra records his vow: "May all beings who hear my name be freed from illness, poverty, and fear — may their every aspiration for happiness and liberation be completely fulfilled." Tibetan physicians traditionally recite his mantra before every diagnosis, regarding him as the ultimate source and guardian of all healing knowledge and compassionate medical practice.

Sacred Mantra

Short form: Om bhaisajye bhaisajye bhaisajya samudgate svaha”

"Salutations to the Medicine Buddha, King of Lapis Light — may all illness be healed, all suffering dissolved, and all beings led swiftly to complete liberation."
