Why This Statue?
This is not a statue — it is a sacred monument. Weighing a substantial 35 lbs and standing nearly 17 inches tall, this fully oxidized Dzambhala shrine arrests attention with its dramatic deep teal-black patina, a finish that speaks of genuine age and ceremonial use. The complete arched torana frame — carved with guardian lions, fierce protectors, ornate pillars, and scrolling borders — makes this a self-contained devotional altar. Every surface was hand-carved using the ancient lost wax method. For serious collectors and devoted practitioners, this piece is extraordinarily rare.
Who Is Dzambhala?
Dzambhala is the Buddhist lord of wealth and abundance, known in Sanskrit as Jambhala. Regarded as a compassionate emanation of Avalokiteśvara, he manifests prosperity not as greed, but as the natural fruit of generosity and merit. Revered across Tibetan, Newar, and Vajrayana traditions, Dzambhala transforms material need into spiritual abundance.
Key Features: Eyes, Hands, and Body Posture
The boldly carved eyes project fierce compassion — protective, watchful, and sovereign. The left hand raises in a commanding gesture holding a jewel-spitting mongoose (nehulay), the deity's iconic emblem of overflowing generosity. The right hand cradles the wish-fulfilling jewel (chintamani). He sits in Maharajalila — the royal ease posture — one leg pendant, embodying relaxed, effortless abundance. The deep oxidized tones accentuate every carved ornament, robe fold, and jewel with dramatic shadow and depth.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
The arched torana transforms this statue into a complete sacred universe. The fierce crown deity repels negativity from above. Guardian lions anchor protective energy below. The mongoose destroys the poison of greed and scarcity. The lotus pedestal affirms abundance rooted in purity. The deep black-teal patina itself symbolizes the timeless, indestructible nature of dharmic wealth — prosperity that transcends passing trends.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Jambhala Tantra teaches: "Tyāgena eko amṛtatvam ānaśuḥ" — "Through generosity alone, one attains immortality." This statue embodies that ancient truth in copper and devotion. The master Newar craftsmen of Patan, Nepal — heirs of an unbroken 1,500-year tradition — seal that wisdom into every cast through the sacred lost wax process.
Sacred Mantra
“Om Dzambhala Dzalendraye Svaha”
"Om, Dzambhala, Lord Of Wealth And Splendor, Svaha."
Chanting this mantra before the statue dissolves obstacles to abundance, purifies miserliness from the mind, and opens the practitioner to Dzambhala's inexhaustible blessings of prosperity, merit, and generous, flowing well-being.
