Why This Statue?
This Chengresi commands reverence the instant it enters a space. Cast using the ancient lost wax method, the copper body is finished in genuine 24K gold gilding — warm, mirror-bright, and deeply luminous. Hand-carved turquoise, red coral, and lapis gemstones encrust the lotus throne and ornamental details in a dazzling, jewel-toned mosaic. Gold and acrylic hand-painted facial features render his expression with lifelike serenity that no factory piece could replicate. At 33.5 cm tall and four-armed, the visual complexity and devotional power of this statue are simply extraordinary.
Who Is Chengresi?
Chengresi, Avalokiteśvara in Sanskrit, is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion, the most universally beloved deity in all of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. He is the compassionate eyes of all Buddhas gazing upon suffering beings without rest. The Dalai Lama is considered his living embodiment, and his mantra is the most recited in the entire Buddhist world. He vowed never to rest until every last being in saṃsāra is liberated.
Key Features: Posture, Eyes, and Hands
Chengresi sits in padmasana — full lotus posture — radiating perfect, unmoving compassion. His gold and acrylic hand-painted eyes are gently downcast, holding every being in a gaze of warm, unwavering mercy. His two primary hands are pressed together at the heart in añjali mudrā, cradling a wish-fulfilling jewel — the cintāmaṇi — between them, symbolising the precious bodhicitta mind. His upper right hand holds a crystal mālā, counting the liberation of every being, while his upper left holds a blooming utpala lotus, representing purity flourishing effortlessly within saṃsāra itself.
Sacred Symbolism and Meaning
Chengresi's four arms represent his compassionate reach across the four immeasurables — loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. The wish-fulfilling jewel cradled at his heart embodies bodhicitta — the aspiration to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all beings — which Chengresi holds as his most precious, irreplaceable treasure. His brilliant golden form reflects the sambhogakāya — the bliss body of a fully enlightened Buddha radiating ceaselessly for the benefit of all.
Sanskrit and Buddhist Wisdom
The Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra declares: "In the pores of Avalokiteśvara's body dwell entire Buddha fields; from his compassion, the sun and moon were born." The great Tibetan master Jamgön Kongtrul taught: "Chengresi is not separate from your own mind — compassion and awareness are one."
Sacred Mantra
“Om Mani Padme Hum”
"Salutations to the jewel in the lotus — may the union of compassion and wisdom purify all obscurations and awaken the enlightened heart within every being without exception."
